What is Biological Globalisation?
The world is globalising, and nature is no exception. More and more plants, animals and microbes are crossing natural barriers and settling in new areas. The sum total of these biological invasions can be termed ‘biological globalisation’. Although this proliferation is anything but new, it is now accelerating as a result of climate change, the globalisation of traffic and transport and the breakdown of distribution barriers.

What questions are considered in this book?
As with all forms of globalisation, bio-globalisation offers both advantages and disadvantages to nature and the human society.
In this book we consider the following questions:

  • What is the nature and scope of biological globalisation?
  • What are the drivers, mechanisms and pathways of distribution?
  • What patterns can be observed in bio-invasions?
  • What are the impacts on nature, environment, the economy and public health?
  • What is the position and role of the Netherlands in bio-globalisation?
  • What impacts do bio-invasions have in the Netherlands?
  • Can we, and should we control bio-invasions?
  • What needs to be done?
